Name: Kikyou Fukushima
Age: 21
Portrayed By: Hitomi
College, Job, or Both: College, Second Year. Major - Religion, Minor - Japanese History. Kikyou also has an internship with the University of California Botanical Gardens
Hobbies/Extracurricular Activities: Archery Club, Yearbook, Herbalism, Origami.
Brief History: Born to a historian mother and an archaeologist father, Kikyou Fukushima was never really a normal girl. Ever since she was little she traveled with her parents all over various parts of Japan as they worked to unearth and catalog treasures from the Sengoku period of Japanese history. This period of time was incredibly important to the Fukushima family considering that Kikyou’s mother and father could both trace their ancestry back to specific people who lived during that time. It was also the time period which spawned the artifact and heirloom that the Fukushima family was famous for, the Shikon no Tama.
The Shikon no Tama was a rare spherical red jade stone that was attached to a legend of great import. Whosoever was in possession of the Shikon no Tama, if possessing of a heart pure of intention, would be blessed with a long and satisfying life of ease. While there was no actual fact associated with this legend in each generation the person who had the jewel was inevitably the subject of some sort of miraculously pleasant event, but what is less-known is that almost all of these people all met an untimely demise.
Sadly, this fate also affected Kikyou’s family. Her mother, who was the eldest daughter of a museum curator who had bequeathed the jewel to her, was doing a presentation on the rich and storied history of the jewel when a lighting rig fell and injured her severely. As she clung to consciousness she gave the jewel over to her now teenaged daughter Kikyou, charging her with the task of keeping the jewel safe from those who would want to take it for their own personal gain.
A studious and serious girl Kikyou took to her task with the utmost haste, quickly making it clear that becoming as well-versed in the history of the time period, her lineage, and the jewel itself were her major priorities. Incredibly single-minded, Kikyou soon found herself learning the arts of shrine tending, herbal remedies, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, archery, origami, and even the art of Japanese cooking. To all who saw her, with her overly traditional leanings towards Japanese culture and wardrobe, she appeared to be a throwback to a time in history when being a woman meant more than it seemed to now.
When a powerful and wealthy businessman who had heard the legend of the jewel and sought to possess it himself threatened her father he sent his two daughters to San Francisco to live with his brother, a Japanese Studies professor at the University of San Francisco. As she was now fifteen and old enough to attend high school Kikyou quickly became known for her quiet demeanor and focus. She was an expert archer, honor roll student, and many could consider her to be a perfect little Mary-Sue goody two-shoes if not for the fact that she radiated a mournful sadness and had no friends as well as seemingly no desire to make any.
Other than her sister and uncle she kept to herself, feeling that any who learned the burden of the jewel she wore in a simple necklace around her neck would be destined to be affected by it’s apparent curse. Still, there was a boy who she could not keep her eyes off of who eventually broke through her iciness. He was loud, violent, and brash - everything she was not and could never be. He found her attractive and made no secret of it, and eventually she allowed herself to feel something for him.
He seemed understanding about the jewel although would occasionally bring up how they could sell it and have everything they ever dreamed of, a side of him that Kikyou find both unsettling and upsetting. She would lament that her duties to making sure the jewel was kept safe and in her family line made her abnormal and how she wished she could simply not have that burden so she could be like every other girl. Over time as their friendship began to grow into something more, both had started to show little changes of heart. She learned that his overly aggressive nature was due to medical issues that his family couldn’t afford to treat and felt that if they did sell the jewel they could take the money and get him treatment so they could both be normal.
What Kikyou didn’t know was that the same businessman, one John Westin, who had threatened her father lived in San Francisco and was watching her. Using his considerable resources he hired someone to impersonate the man Kikyou loved and stage a fight over her devotion to the jewel and how it was eclipsing their relationship as they walked home from school one day. In the heat of the moment as things were getting more tense the actor made a grab for the necklace causing it to break as Kikyou went falling backwards into the busy street. With her last gasp she managed to wrench the necklace from the man’s grasp just as a car struck her down.
Staying conscious just long enough to give instructions to have the jewel placed someplace only she would know about, Kikyou fell into a coma. The doctors were certain she would be in a vegetative state permanently but her sister Kaede never gave up hope. She and Kikyou’s uncle would visit her daily, telling her stories of the woman who had guarded the jewel before her. These stories kept Kikyou thriving, and after five long and difficult years the now twenty-year-old woman emerged from her coma. Worried that her memory would be affected, her uncle asked if she remembered anything, to which Kikyou provided an account of her last moments including the location of the necklace.
After an extensive rehabilitation process Kikyou was deemed fit to return to life as she knew it, but while she was still the same studious and serious girl she had an aura of bitterness around her. Quickly taking the needed courses to finish out her diploma she enrolled in Mishima University as a Religion major with a minor in Japanese history. The necklace, now repaired, remains in it’s place of honor around her neck and due to past experiences she has made a vow to herself to never allow herself to feel love for another again.
